Dr. Pamela Dee^^ (Dr. Pam) is America’s leading menopause expert & OB/GYN, and she is on a mission to encourage honest dialogue about the physical and emotional symptoms that accompany menopause. Her goal is to de-stigmatize menopause and start the “Menopause Romance Revolution.” Her film, LOVE, SWEAT & TEARS, shares an empowering message of hope and action. Dr. Pam^^ won’t rest until every woman knows the truth about menopause, that there is hope and that the third part of a woman’s life can be the best and most romantic.
As a Certified Menopause Practitioner, my priority has always been the comfort and safety of my patients, and that’s why I have partnered with Estroven® and their naturally-sourced, hormone-free*** products for menopause symptoms. Estroven® has introduced a new product for menopause relief that addresses all the symptoms of menopause^. There have been multiple clinical trials demonstrating that the main ingredient of this new product, a plant-derived rhubarb extract, is safe and effective in managing all of a woman’s menopausal symptoms^.
A good health-care provider (HCP) will base his or her recommendations for any treatment on clinical evidence. A reliable study in medical trials is one in which a patient is “randomized” (usually by a computer program) to get the drug or a placebo (an exact replica of the drug tablet that does not have a drug actually in it). Another good indicator of a well-performed study is that neither the HCP nor the patient knows if they are on the real drug or a placebo; this is called a “double-blind, placebo-controlled” study. There are several of these studies that are important. The first is a study that clinically demonstrated a significant reduction in overall menopausal symptoms by up to 60% with this extract*3. In two double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled studies, the rhubarb extract was significantly more effective than placebo in improving the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS II) total score. Another study done on 112 patients for 12 weeks, revealed that hot flashes were significantly reduced by up to 80% *1. My favorite study which was performed on 109 patients for 12 weeks demonstrated a 61% decrease in menopause-related anxiety compared to the beginning of the study *2. Anxiety during the peri-menopause transition can be even more debilitating for some women than severe hot flashes. Menopausal anxiety tends to exacerbate the other physical symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, mood swings, sleep interference, and memory problems.
So, how does this rhubarb extract work? Well, it is important to know that a woman has two estrogen receptors: the alpha estrogen receptor, and the beta estrogen receptor. Alpha receptors are primarily expressed in organs of the reproductive systems (uterus, ovary and breast). Beta receptors are more prevalent in other tissues such as the colon, lung, bladder, and brain. According to the work of Heldring and Pike et al in 2007, and Dahlman-Wright, and Cavailles et al. in 2006, the alpha estrogen receptor may stimulate the proliferation of breast cancer and typical hormone replacement therapy binds to this receptor in the cell. The rhubarb extract works by activating only the beta estrogen receptor. The researchers at Estroven® have chosen a drug-free and hormone-free option that avoids activating the alpha estrogen receptor.
I cannot stress the importance of relying on thought out well executed clinical trials whether treating a disease or symptoms of that disease or medical problem. Evidence-based medicine protects patients from potentially unhelpful or even harmful products. It is imperative that treatments for any medical issue be evaluated fully by well-done studies and that these studies are qualified by expert reviewers to assure the results are valid. It is only for you, the patient’s, overall protection.
