Wellness Care: In Perspective

In Perspective

We spent our twenties exploring our place in life. We may have gone to college or vocational school, tried our hands at different jobs, travelled to different places, and met all types of people. Overall, we kept our minds open to new opportunities and adventures.

As the years passed, we became more focused on making concrete decisions — establishing ourselves in a career, finding a lifelong mate, settling into a home, and possibly starting a family. Taking care of our responsibilities was a priority, giving whatever it took to succeed, whether it was time, love, money, or some other precious resource.

So now that we've spent decades establishing ourselves, who will we be in the years ahead? Experts agree that how we choose to approach midlife can profoundly affect the way we live in our later years.

We hear so much about the proverbial "midlife crisis" that it seems almost inevitable. Are we required to mourn a loss of youth, to live with the constant thought that our lives are half over and all we have to look forward to is slowing down, health problems, and death?

The rite of passage into our middle ages does not have to be a crisis. The changes we are experiencing (physical, emotional, mental, etc.) cannot be denied, but reports from most middle-aged adults suggest that for the general population, this time of life is no more problematic than any other. New challenges present themselves all the time, but it's how they're dealt with that makes the difference.

It's up to us. We can approach the changes and challenges ahead either as a difficult trek, or commit ourselves to an exciting journey full of opportunity and growth.

It's your life — live it fully!
